HERE YOU ARE:
There's no need for words to tell this story!
When I am King is a well designed and hilariously narrated graphic novel. In 2000, it gained international prestige when graphic designer Demian Vogler began his web comic.
Now Jaja has made it into a proper book, presenting a developed and completed story about a king whose loincloth has been eaten by a camel.... and many more strange adventures.
« When I am King is web-native comics at its best; the fact that it looks great in print, too, is a happy surprise! »
« When I am King was the first web comic I read. And like a camel in love I still have a crush.»
PART 1: MESSAGE IN A BOTTLE
A pair of birds live peacefully on a little island in a nameless ocean. When a red bottle appears, everything changes and the adventure begins.
bachwald is a team of two comic artists: Benjamin Gottwald and Julian Fiebach. It's amazing how they manage to tell the story in a thrilling way with no words, but with lots of colorful atmospheric images.
PART 2: THROUGH THE FOG
The excursion continues.
The two birds travel through the fog, across cliffs to a black rock tower. Who lives here? And how to get to the moon from here on? Again, bachwald tells the exciting story without any words.
Kazka is a trippy and sometimes funny action comic which, without words, tells the story of a boy who tries to reassemble his girlfriend that died in a spaceship accident, while the last survivor of the ship’s crew tries to gain control over the abstract energy that actually caused the accident.
Borrowing from urban-art, there is also a manganese tendency within action loaded spreads and landscapes – one panorama at the end stretches across 8 pages!
Though there is a clear reference to the biblical story of Noah’s Arc, Kazka’s abstract, mythological images and the absence of words are an invitation for own thoughts and interpretations.
